English group class

Children around ages 3–6 work through TLC’s stages 1–4: phonemic awareness, phonics and sight words. The goal is to read easy English books (readers) smoothly, with clear pronunciation.

Mother Goose rhymes, nursery songs and seasonal songs build the natural rhythm of English and introduce the culture of the English-speaking world.

Children age 6 and up, or children who already read on their own, move to stage 5: fluency and comprehension. We assess each child’s reading level and match them with books for wide reading.

What children gain

  • Accurate decoding through phonics and sight words
  • Clear pronunciation and the rhythm of English
  • Reading fluency through wide reading
  • A path to Eiken Pre-1 / CEFR B2 and above

Ideal for

  • Beginners starting English from zero
  • Children who want strong reading and writing skills
  • Eiken or private school admissions preparation
  • Children aiming for the top of their class at school

Japanese group class

For families living outside Japan who are concerned about their child’s Japanese.

Children growing up abroad have limited time with Japanese. Many speak it at home but can’t read hiragana or kanji, and rarely pick up a Japanese book. It is natural for their Japanese to develop more slowly.

Like our English classes, our Japanese class is built on Science of Reading principles, with reading at the center: children first build phonemic awareness in Japanese with TLC’s original Japanese alphabet songs. Hiragana starts with あいうえお; children then join the kana they know into two-character words such as あお, いえ and あい, then three-character words. It is the same idea as phonics in English. In this order, children become able to read Japanese books with ease.

Finger-play songs and seasonal songs bring Japanese culture to life, and riddles, quizzes and word games build thinking in Japanese. Once children can read, they keep absorbing Japanese from books on their own.

Frequently asked questions

What age can my child start?

Children can start from about age 3. Children around ages 3–6 work through TLC’s stages 1–4: phonemic awareness, phonics and sight words. Children age 6 and up, or younger children who already read on their own, work on stage 5: reading fluency and comprehension.

Do you have families in European time zones?

Yes. Children currently join from Czechia, Italy, France and Switzerland. Tell us your time zone in a free consultation, and we’ll let you know which class times fit.

Is it a good fit for children learning English as a second language?

Yes. For 25 years in Honolulu, we have taught children who arrived from Japan with no English. Native-speaker teachers teach in English only, with reading and writing from the first lesson: phonics first, then sight words, word reading and easy sentences. Parents don’t need to speak English.

Can we join from any country?

Yes. Lessons run on Zoom, so any computer, tablet or smartphone will work. Right now children join from Czechia, Italy, France, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Singapore, Japan and more. Our bilingual staff help you get connected.

How long are lessons?

Group lessons are 45 minutes; private lessons are 60 minutes. Flashcards, reading and games move at a lively pace, so children stay engaged. Children who are new to learning online settle in quickly.

How many children are in a group?

Two to four. Children learn from each other, and the teacher can follow every child closely.

We live abroad and worry about our child’s Japanese. Is the Japanese class a good fit?

Yes. The Japanese class is designed for children living outside Japan — including children who speak Japanese but can’t yet read it, and children who barely speak it. We build reading step by step, starting with hiragana. Tell us about your child in a free consultation.

My child doesn’t speak English yet. Is that OK?

Yes. Our curriculum starts from zero and moves at your child’s pace. Parents don’t need to speak English either.

Is there homework?

Yes — original worksheets for reading fluency and writing. Each step builds on the last, so children gain confidence as they progress.

Can we make up a missed lesson?

One makeup lesson per month is available. Please email us at least 30 minutes before class. Absences without notice count as attended. Makeup lessons cannot be rescheduled again.
